A driver of a Scania Van escaped with minor injuries when the car he was driving caught fire after hitting a house in Dedza.
Police deputy publicist in the district Cassim Manda said the incident occurred at around 9PM on Monday and identified the driver as Aron Phiri, 27.
Manda said Phiri who was driving the Scania Van registration number KA 3126 was coming from South Africa through Dedza border post.
On arrival at Nampala village near Chongoni turn-off along M1 road, he lost control of the vehicle and it swerved to the left of the road where it hit the house of 65 year-old Franky Khomba and demolished it while the owner was fast asleep in the house.
The vehicle caught fire and burnt to ashes together with assorted items worth millions of kwacha but the Phiri quickly got out of the vehicle. Meanwhile, the driver and house owner are receiving medical attention at Dedza district hospital.
Phiri hails from Nsalu village T/A Kabudula in Lilongwe while Franky Khomba hails from Nampala village T/A Kaphuka in Dedza.
Why escape? Was he drunk? Mad? Or nomal?
