This comes at a time when the nurses and midwives in the district hospital have just ended a four day strike which was meant to force the ministry of health to transfer Mwanza district health officer Ralph Pilingu.

The medical workers claim that Pilingu has been ill-treating them and that he is failing to provide the hospital with necessary equipment and resources.

Commenting on the development, Executive Director for National Organisation of Nurses in Malawi (NONM) Dorothy Ngoma said government needs to come in and resolve the issue amicably.

She said one way of dealing with the issue is to employ more medical workers since the strike has come about due to shortage of employees at the hospital a situation which forces nurses to work for many hours.

Ngoma also urged government to make sure that it pays the nurses and midwives who are forced to work on locum.
