Lhomwe state: Pressure group wants referendum

People’s Land Organisation (PLO) has asked government to organise a referendum so that people in Mulanje and Thyolo can vote on whether the districts should become one sovereign state or not.

PLO has been lobbying for the two districts to become one independent state saying government has failed to resolve the land wrangles in the areas.

Leader of PLO Vincent Wandale said government should let people of Mulanje and Thyolo speak for themselves on whether the districts should form an independent state through a referendum.

He said government signed covenants that gives people the right to self-determination.

“Government signed the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant and Economic Social Cultural Rights which says people have the right to exercise the right to self-determination,” said Wandale.

However, in a statement released by the ministry of information on Thursday, government said it needed much time to resolve the matter.

But Wandale said the issue has been there for a long time and government has been saying it needed time hence this time the group will not relent.

So Malawi will have a federal government in the North, federal government in the Centre, except for Ntcheu because the people there chose to align themselves with Mulhakho and another for Thyolo and Mulanje. The remaining districts in the South will choose which way to go for their independence. Let us push for this because it will be an interesting scenario to have autonomous groupings. Who will lead the federal government in the North? For the Centre there is already one in the name of Chakwera, and for the South, maybe Chaponda will battle it out with Muthalika, Mtengowaminga Henry Mussa and who else, I do not know. kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk, mwikho.

  11. Please someone should stop this madness. Malawi is too small to be divided. Who ever is advocating for that must be sent to mental hospital. Referendum for what? This madness? I don’t think so. Malawi is one and can not be divided. God bless Malawi, our leaders and our motherland

    1. federalism can work in malawi the argument your giving can not hold water Malawi is not small for federalis. i can give you example of some countries who are small than malawi like switzerland is only one third of malawi size but it follows federal system. research before you say anything

  71. I went to a school where Bingu and Peter Mutharika went in early 80s after them 40 years before. I was the youngest pupil in the std 8 class sharing a desk with Angie Kaliati a husband to Patricia. What has come to my mind about the lhomwes I remember very well is that, I was most loved by almost every one in the class more especially who repeated the class for more than 8 years without gettin selected to any secondary school in Malawi and never decided to go and try to some other better schools for a change so that could get selected, but all was in vain. Namulenga boys, Nsanjama and Makulo schools atleast had better teachers and some few got selected. Funny enough, Chingoli school was only known for many toilets built by these rejected miserable pupils. I been from a civilized nyika republic, was able to teach some of them BODMAS during break time although most of them memorised the whole maths text book including, pages and number, but beyond that had no better plan to sustain their studies to secondary levels aternatively. I do not think lhomwes can do something better all together. And for those in leadership and power I question their intergrity. No wonder why as a nation we are failing to progress. Sorry to share my experience. All the best guys. Change is for you.
