People’s Land Organisation (PLO) has asked government to organise a referendum so that people in Mulanje and Thyolo can vote on whether the districts should become one sovereign state or not.
PLO has been lobbying for the two districts to become one independent state saying government has failed to resolve the land wrangles in the areas.
Leader of PLO Vincent Wandale said government should let people of Mulanje and Thyolo speak for themselves on whether the districts should form an independent state through a referendum.
He said government signed covenants that gives people the right to self-determination.
“Government signed the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant and Economic Social Cultural Rights which says people have the right to exercise the right to self-determination,” said Wandale.
However, in a statement released by the ministry of information on Thursday, government said it needed much time to resolve the matter.
But Wandale said the issue has been there for a long time and government has been saying it needed time hence this time the group will not relent.

So Malawi will have a federal government in the North, federal government in the Centre, except for Ntcheu because the people there chose to align themselves with Mulhakho and another for Thyolo and Mulanje. The remaining districts in the South will choose which way to go for their independence. Let us push for this because it will be an interesting scenario to have autonomous groupings. Who will lead the federal government in the North? For the Centre there is already one in the name of Chakwera, and for the South, maybe Chaponda will battle it out with Muthalika, Mtengowaminga Henry Mussa and who else, I do not know. kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk, mwikho.
