Thyolo and Mulanje Republic in the offing

The continued failure by government to solve estate land issues that started months ago, has yet again seen the resurrection of calls for Mulanje and Thyolo districts to secede from mainland Malawi.

The advocates have been making the calls through the People’s Land Organisation (PLO).

The grouping  wants the government to rule that all the companies which own estates in the districts got them illegally and also wants all the tea estates which are not being used to be shared to people who don’t have land for cultivation.

PLO leader, Vincent Wandale, has overtime maintained that the Malawi government has failed to meet the demands of the people in the two districts.

While saying that the job opportunities that tea companies that are owed by Britons are just not enough for people, he said it is unfortunate that the companies have not developed the two districts and that they pay just little money to the laborers.

”Just MK8500 for a fortnight?. How can the people support their families with just little money? Wondered Wandale in a recent interview with the media.

”This Declaration of Independence of Thyolo and Mulanje Districts of the republic of Malawi reflects the will of the people of Thyolo and Mulanje. It is made in accordance with the charter of the United Nations provisions on peaceful self-determination and was sanctioned by over 1000 names and signatures of PLO members that petitioned the UN on 15th September 2015 to act on the payment claims of thangata and colonial land grab submitted to colonial estate owners of Thyolo and Mulanje. The petition was shared with Government of Malawi on 15th July 2015 for their prior intervention which proved futile.” posted Wandale on Facebook recently in a post he dubbed declaration of  Independence of Thyolo and Mulanje ditsricts from the republic of Malawi.

In December last year the grouping had given the Peter Mutharika administration just 30 days to negotiate on the matter and that failure would make the two districts their own country.

The two districts according to PLO will be known as “African Traditionalist Republic of the United States of Thyolo and Mulanje (MUST).”

The PLO has however received condemnation by chiefs from the two districts who Malawi24 understands that th PLO belive they have been bribed not to support the calls.

Vocal Senior Chief Ngolongoliwa Thyolo maintains that the chiefs do not support the calls for the peace and unity of Malawi and not for the said attachment to the government.

“We are the custodians of the people but all of us do not know him and his conduct request police to investigate and arrest him so that he properly explains his bizarre actions,” said Ngolongoliwa.

He said Police should arrest Wandele for conduct likely to cause breach of peace in his demand for Thyolo and Mulande to have self-rule and that he was also “swindling people’s money under the pretence that he will give them land.”

  45. I myself I was born and raised in Thyolo, worked at one of the factories as a Tea Picker for years, I don’t drink, I am married to my beautiful Maria, and we only have two children. I am an educated person but due to lack of opportunities I am still stuck with these asamunda. You claim to have done away with Colonial rule, but that’s not the case here in Thyolo. These whites do not put Malawians welfare into consideration at all, all they think about is how to make profits out of poor Malawians anr are graced by our own govt. As much as I know that closing these factories will have a great impact on our economy but its a huge step towards preserving the little humanity we fight for. These lands were taken by force those years and its not wise of our government to turn a blind eye on this evil act regardless that it happened a long time ago. They are benefiting from evil. Lets make things right again. Give to Thyolo people what its rightfully ours. Have you seen how houses in villages are arranged? Go to Ndalama village or Nzuwa village you will see that houses were arranged not that the people wanted it but asamunda anachita kuwasanja after kuwalanda malo.     1. Wandale deserves our support coz its true that estate owners who are whites have been illtreating Malawians. They dont even honour minimum wage set by gvt. Declaring the 2 districts into a republic is a nonstarter coz that may bring unnecesary divisions but whites must vacate these estates even by force. Chiefs in Malawi are always useless and are easily enticed with little money so we beta ignore them and use our own powers as pipo of tyolo and mulanje.
