Malawians have expressed shock over the hike in fuel prices arguing that it will raise the cost of living.
On Thursday, Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) announced that fuel prices have been adjusted following a sharp depreciation of the local currency against major currencies in the world.
Petrol is now at K743.30 from K711.90 while diesel is at K722.90 from 671.30 and paraffin will be sold at K580.80 from K522.30 per litre.
Commenting on an article that Malawi24 published, Malawians expressed concern over the hike in fuel prices.
“The problem now is that prices of different commodities are to go up and this will mean that we have to dig deep in our pockets,” commented Kim Kamwendo.
While Rodgers Mzembe wrote: “The problem in Malawi is that when fuel prices have gone high everything follows suit, coming of this development on the already injured economy like of Malawi eeeh we should expect miserable life a head”.
Others felt that MERA should have waited for people to have food before effecting the hike.
Elijah Malamula said: “government through MERA should have waited up to harvesting period, so that poor Malawians in rural should easily adapt to the changes.”
However, the fuel price hike in Malawi comes at a time when fuel prices around the world continue to go down.
