Malawi Police officers in the lakeshore district of Nkhotakota are keeping in custody 36 year-old Frank Kampala for being found in possession of Indian hemp which is locally known as Chamba.

Illegal in Malawi but recognized globally as the rare one.

According to Nkhotakota Police Public Relations Officer Williams Kaponda, police in the district mounted an ad hoc roadblock at Mkaika Trading Centre and later a Lakelands passenger bus travelling from Dwangwa to Blantyre with passengers on the board stopped at the roadblock.

“Upon conducting search in the bus boot, police found two big black travelling bags loaded with Chamba,” Kaponda said.

When the police officers questioned the driver they found that the bag belonged to Kampala.

The law enforcers seized the illicit drug and the suspect will appear in court soon to answer the charge of being found in possession of Chamba which is an illicit drug.

The suspect hails from Ndinda Village, Traditional Authority Kalumo in Ntchisi district.
