Malawi’s Minister of lands, housing and urban development Atupele Muluzi has warned that buildings in cities and towns which are in protected areas will be demolished.
The minister said high urbanization is the main reason why people have built houses in protected areas such as on river banks and hills.
”It’s a big challenge in the country as Malawi is one of the high urbanization countries and it is causing people to encroach in protected areas especially in major cities,” said Muluzi.
He further said that the ministry together with the country’s city councils is planning to relocate people staying in protected areas.
“We have noticed that there is a lot of illegal encroachment especially in urban areas and our ministry together with city councils will relocate people who are staying in illegal areas,” he said.
In Malawi, population growth in areas defined as urban areas is estimated at 5.2 percent per year.
According to a United Nations Center of Human Settlement (UNCHS) study of Blantyre and some trading centres in northern and central regions, urban areas in Malawi are becoming populated and noisy due to rapid urbanization.
