Government says Malawi’s security agencies are always on alert to detect any suspicious activities in the country.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Emmanuel Fabiano said this at a press briefing which was held at Central Information Offices in Lilongwe following a newspaper article linking Malawi to the terrorist attack by Al-shabab in Kenya last week.

Emmanuel Fabiano: Malawi on alert

Speaking with reporters, Minister of Foreign Affairs Emmanuel Fabiano said that the ministry received a report that from the available factual information no Malawian was involved in the attack.

Fabiano condemned the story saying the government of Malawi and its citizens do not condone any acts of terrorism hence there is need to safeguard the image and reputation of the country.

“The government will take all necessary measures to get to the bottom of the allegations in collaboration with appropriate authorities both in Malawi and abroad. Our security agencies are always on alert for any suspicious activities in this country,” he explained

The Malawi News article published last weekend was based on a defamatory claim by a South African analyst that Al-Shabab recruits Malawians. The analyst was commenting on the 15th January attack in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi where gunmen stormed a luxury hotel compound and killed 21 people.

At the press briefing, Minister of Information and Communication Technology Henry Mussa urged the media to refrain from reporting news without proper investigation to avoid causing harm among the population including damaging Malawi’s relations with its neighbors and partners.
