NGO wants Primary School girls to be taught about sex

It has been established that most girls drop out of school for various causes among them falling pregnant.

Girls in the rural areas have been said to be atop the list of those who drop out either to get married or because they have fallen pregnant.

This is why The Malawi Girl Guides Association (MAGGA) has stressed that primary school girls especially those in rural areas need to be equipped with comprehensive sexuality education to enable them overcome challenges that effect their education such as unplanned pregnancies.

The remarks were made during a quiz competition that was organised by UNFPA in Salima. National Coordinator for MAGGA, Mphatso Baluwa Jim said reproductive and sexual education is critical to keeping girls in school and help them make correct choices about what they want to be in future.

As one way of stressing girls education in the country the country’s First Lady Getrude Mutharika through Beautify Malawi Trust recently launched an initiative called Bring Back Girl Child to School Project with the aim of allowing girls who dropped out school for various reasons to get back to school.

  8. educationaly it might be good,but traditionaly it might be a taboo,the greatest fear to we parents towards NGOs is that the next step will sharing of CONDOMS to learners in all PRIMARY SCHOOLS, somewhere somehow there will be DANGER !!

  43. This is 1 way of separating girls from boys in other ways most boys will drop out of xool since NGO,s are in favour of Girls only!!!! So i think educate both to be responsible of their actions! Since its boy/ men who are encouraging this to be happening so this kind of Education needs to be told to both parties not 1 side only!!!

  52. But this is not the right way to solve it. We have a different culture with western. That wil make it worst. But we need to teach parents civic education first. They are the one who can talk to their kids not to engage with sexual activites. We also need to have social workers who can assist parents and children on how to handle the problem. We have already chinamwali, dyando etc were teenagers are taught how to behave in the communities. I think NGO need to pass thru our customs and traditions. The proplem is not sex. But the source of social skills and how to manage it. Parents are the big players on this procces. Teachers need to focus on academic only. We are Africans and we need to do things in African way not Western.
