It has been established that most girls drop out of school for various causes among them falling pregnant.
Girls in the rural areas have been said to be atop the list of those who drop out either to get married or because they have fallen pregnant.
This is why The Malawi Girl Guides Association (MAGGA) has stressed that primary school girls especially those in rural areas need to be equipped with comprehensive sexuality education to enable them overcome challenges that effect their education such as unplanned pregnancies.
The remarks were made during a quiz competition that was organised by UNFPA in Salima. National Coordinator for MAGGA, Mphatso Baluwa Jim said reproductive and sexual education is critical to keeping girls in school and help them make correct choices about what they want to be in future.
As one way of stressing girls education in the country the country’s First Lady Getrude Mutharika through Beautify Malawi Trust recently launched an initiative called Bring Back Girl Child to School Project with the aim of allowing girls who dropped out school for various reasons to get back to school.
