Huge numbers of desperate Malawians have been seen idling around Lindela Repatriation Centre in South Africa after being released from the centre.

Malawi24 understands that the South African Government has stopped deporting Malawians saying that it has no funds to carry out deportations.

However, authorities in South Africa are still arresting Malawians and people of other nationalities who are living in the country illegally.

Once they spend six months at Lindela Repatriation Centre, they are released and dumped around the facility.

One of the Malawians released last week after spending six month at Lindela, Thabiso Phakati, shared his story with this publication.

“I have seen my fellow Malawians around Lindela desperately begging on the streets, they have no any other option,” he said. “I saw women just crying outside Lindela, when you are in Lindela you receive meal once a day.”

Late last year, government said it had repatriated over 2000 Malawians who were detained at Lindela while other detained Malawians made their own arrangements to come back home.
