The High Court in Lilongwe has convicted a married couple and eight civil servants of theft and money laundering of K210 million as well as of conspiracy to commit a felony.
Judge Charles Mkandawire found the ten guilty of the offences committed in 2011.
The court found that between November 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011 the married couple Cornelius and Yvonne Kaphantengo who are also business partners used their company Nova Technology and General Dealing Ltd to siphon money from the Ministry of Disability.
The couple then shared the money with the eight civil servant: Chikondi Chimutu, Deusdedit Tenthani, Tendai Nayeja, Conrad Nambala, Squire Chakwana, Wides Machika Mbuliro, Tapiwa Ng’oma and Emmanuel Yesaya.
Mkandawire said Nambala, who was the 8th accused person, seemed to be the epicentre of the crime.
Anti- Corruption Bureau (ACB) director general Reyneck Matemba has since welcomed the conviction and has dedicated it to people like Traditional Authority Sitola who are not afraid to speak out about corruption.
