Mangochi first Grade Magistrate court has fined a 32-year old driver for causing the death of a student through careless driving.
According to Mangochi Police spokesperson Amina Daudi, on July 22 at around 10am the convict Lucius Kadzembe was driving a Toyota Voxy registration number MJ 2145 from the direction of Liwonde heading to Mangochi.
Upon arrival at Wanja village in the district, he hit two male students at St Johns University who were walking on the verge along the road heading the same direction.
“Following the impact, one of the students sustained head injury and died while receiving treatment at Mangochi District Hospital while the other student escaped with minor injuries,” she said.
In court, Kadzembe pleaded guilty to the charge of causing death and asked the court to be lenient with him when passing judgment.
First Grade Magistrate Ronald M’bwana told him to pay a fine of K750,000 or in default to serve 36 months imprisonment with hard labour for killing an innocent soul negligently.
The driver paid the money in cash and the bereaved family received K250,000 as compensation.
Lucius Kadzembe comes from Ntenje village, Traditional Authority Chimwala in the district.
