Despite calls that minibus operators should not demonstrate, the authorities’ pleas have hit a snag following demonstrations in some parts of Malawi capital, Lilongwe by minibus operators.
Minibus operators at Area 23 among others are protesting despite agreement of Lilongwe Minibus Owners Association and Minibus Owners Association of Malawi (MOAM) to call off the protests.
The minibus operators at Area 23 took to the streets protesting against the new rules but the situation was cooled off by police officers.
Meanwhile, there are no minibuses available at Area 23 since all minibuses have been dispersed by police officers.
Commuters were seen boarding open vehicles to go to town.
The situation has posed a threat to passengers who board minibuses to Lilongwe town.
Last week, minibus operators in Blantyre and Mzuzu also took to the streets against new rules imposed against them.
Recently, the Malawi Human Rights Consultative Committee (MHRCC) faulted riots by minibus drivers and conductors who were protesting against implementation of the new road laws in the country.
