Malawi Super League: Nomads mauled by Mzuni

A brace from Hudson Milanzi and a goal each from Fraston Chisi and Luwindiko Nhlane inspired Mzuni FC to an emphatic 4-2 victory over Be Forward Wanderers in a league match played at Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Green Intellectuals turned themselves into lecturers when they taught Wanderers some footballing lessons in front of the latter’s supporters who were left speechless with how the visitors played throughout the entire 90 minutes.

Coming straight from their 1-0 victory over Prison United in a cup game on Saturday, the Nomads wasted no time as they took the lead just after five minutes into the half through Jimmy Zakazaka who connected well from Francis Mulimbika’s cross, 1-0.

But just when the home fans were still celebrating, the visitors responded in style when Chisi made a simple finish following Wanderers’ failure to deal with a set piece from the left flank of the northern goal post, 1-1. Two minutes later, it was 2-1.

Nhlane’s penalty shout was turned down by referee Happy Ng’ambi but that did not stop him from putting the ball into the back of the net when he dribbled past Boston Kabango in defence for the Nomads before slotting past Wanderers’ shot-stopper Richard Chipuwa, 2-1.

The Nomads tried to hit back when they launched a counter hurricane attack through Peter Wadabwa and Zakazaka but Mzuni’s defence responded well by clearing the danger away.

With some few minutes to play before the interval, the Green Intellectuals scored their third goal through Milanzi who connected well from Chisi’s low-cross drive into the penalty box to arouse their fans who were now living their dream of collecting maximum points over the Lali Lubani giants.

After the recess, Wanderers brought in Ernest Tambe and Amos Bello to try to snatch something from the game.

The Nomads were the better side in the half as they pressed harder in search for goals to put the match on level.

Zakazaka and Wadabwa exchanged passes to release Bello who, instead of putting the ball into the back of the net, decided to feed Kaziputa who arrived late as Mzuni recovered. Zakazaka tried his luck again in the 64th minute but his speculative half-volley from range was comfortably off target.

The Nomads then brought in Genk Nakamura whilst Zeliat Nkhoma was hauled off as the battle in the midfield intensified. But just when the Nomads thought the game was still wide open, Mzuni nailed it through Milanzi who scored a fantastic volley metres away from Chipuwa’s goal line, 4-1.

However, there was a moment of madness when referee Ngwira awarded Wanderers a penalty but Mzuni supporters responded by throwing missiles into the pitch and the match had to stop for some minutes.

When the game resumed, Wadabwa stepped up to slot past Rabson Chiyenda in goals for the visitors, 4-2.

Despite reducing the arrears, Mzuni held on to collect all the three points and moved up to fifth with 27 points from 15 games, five points behind league leaders Blue Eagles.

As for the Nomads, they have finished the first round on 7th position with 24 points from the same number of games.
