Madonna warned: Mercy’s family want their child back

Madonna has been warned that she will be forced to send her adopted daughter Mercy James back to Malawi if she fails to make an arrangement that satisfies the girl’s natural family.

According to British media, a friend of Mercy’s biological mother says the pop star should talk to Mercy’s family or she will face a huge battle to keep the child.

The friend, 25 year-old Agatha Molande, claims that Mercy’s family never wanted to be separated from the child permanently and were deceived into believing that they will be visiting the girl regularly.

Said Molande: “For them it is a battle they will not stop fighting. Madonna needs to understand that as Mercy grows older and becomes aware of these things it may not be good for her and all parties concerned.”

Mercy’s biological mother died eight days after the girl was born in January 2005 and the child was placed at an orphanage since her family could not take care of her.

“They had an agreement with the orphanage that Mercy would return to them upon reaching the age of six since in Malawi children are thought to have developed immunity from disease once they pass the age of five,” said Molande.

Later, Madonna visited the orphanage and offered to adopt the child.

Mercy’s grandmother refused to endorse the adoption but her sons and former husband convinced her to sign adoption papers saying Mercy would be coming to Malawi regularly.

Molande acknowledged that Madonna adopted the girl in good faith as she believed she was rescuing Mercy from poverty.

She however insisted that Mercy’s natural family still loves the girl and want her back.

“Somehow it seems to have been wrongly interpreted that by putting her at an orphanage they no longer cared for her, or that they were happy for her to be adopted, which is totally incorrect,” said Molande.

Mercy’s family claims they have never talked to the child since the adoption.

However, a spokesperson for the 57-year-old superstar insisted that the “girl has never had her past or her heritage hidden from her and she visits Malawi every year to learn about her roots and to visit friends and family.”

The spokesperson added: “Inaccurate stories about Mercy’s adoption harm no one more than the child herself.”

  15. Maybe the family needs to learn what is adoption under the law. Once a child has been adopted, the birth parents have Zero (0) right to the child. In the eyes of the law, the adopting parents are the legal parents and there is absolutely nothing the birth parents can legally do. Someone should tell these parents who Madonna is. The child was on intense feeding program. When the child got better achibale came kumufuna. She gave up kuwatsa. This was the uncle and when they got to the village the child was handed to the grand mother who was very old. The child later suffered severe malnutrition again and was rescued again.
