The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) says it will not conduct by-elections in Dedza South following the death of the constituency’s Member of Parliament (MP).
The seat has fallen vacant following the death of Honorable Patrick Themu on Friday, 4th January, 2019 who was elected in the 2014 tripartite elections on Malawi Congress Party (MCP) ticket.
The Commission through it’s chief elections officer, Sam Alfandika says it will not conduct by-elections for the vacant constituency as the current National Assembly shall stand dissolved on the 20th of March 2019.
Alfandika said it would be impractical and just wastage of resources to hold by-elections in the vacant constituency ahead of the May polls.
The Commission has since condoled the family and relatives of the late Member of Parliament, the Malawi Congress Party and the Malawi National Assembly for the loss.
