Mutharika raps Chakwera: handle squabbles in your party instead of accusing me

President Peter Mutharika has told leader of opposition in Parliament Lazarus Chakwera to end the in-house fighting in his Malawi Congress Party (MCP) instead of talking about the president’s failure to govern this country.

Mutharika said this on Tuesday during the official opening of Phalombe Teachers Training College (TTC) and laying of a foundation stone at the construction area of the Phalombe district hospital.

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader told Chakwera openly that what is important now is to rebuild MCP to make it strong so that it shall stand the heat come 2019.

“They are saying that the government has failed what is that? He is failing to run his own party, he should start reconstructing his party first,” he said.

Mutharika was referring to the current wrangles in MCP in which secretary general Gustav Kaliwo has his own faction with the support of regional and district chairpersons as they are calling for a change of leadership of the party.

However, the group’s plan of holding convention early next month hit a snag as the Chakwera led faction obtained a court injunction against the convention.

Responding to the recent calls from opposition and Civil Society Organisations that he should throw in the towel as the leader of this nation, Mutharika said the critics are ignoring the projects his government is carrying out in the country.

“Others say that there is nothing which we have done, Perhaps they are blind that they can’t see that we are doing a number of works,” he said.

He added that people who are demanding him to step down as the leader of this country are just wasting their resources since he is also ready to defeat them in the forthcoming elections.

“There are some people who want to remove this government, they are saying that I should step down before 2019 that can’t happen, ndizawanyenyanyenya (I will defeat them),” said Mutharika.

Meanwhile, the president has asked Malawians to have patience with government’s projects and has assured the public that his government will do its best.

  48. That’s insane mr president.. Chakwera is doing his job as the opposition leader of the house. Also you have ur own arguments to your party but when it comes to the development of country chakwera has all rights to criticize you on how you govern the country co both you stand for malawian people and not dpp or mcp. The duty of opposition leader is to criticize the ruling government on any unacceptable behaviour that can distract the development of the country. Mr president you better stop bringingng your political parties arguments into the gggovernment..
