A Scania truck carrying charcoal has burnt to ashes this morning in the commercial city of Blantyre.
Confirming to Malawi24, Chileka police spokesperson Grace Mwale said the truck registration number MHG 4040 belonged to Yenkha Transport and was loaded with 236 bags of charcoal.
Mwale added that the truck which was being driven by Gerrard Haswel was coming from Mwanza district and the charcoal was expected to be offloaded in Zingwangwa Township.
“The vehicle carried 236 bags of charcoal from Mwanza to Zingwangwa but at the road block when the officers were about to start checking, fire started at the back,” said Mwale.
A Malawi24 crew visited the scene and found the fire still burning as efforts to put it out yielded nothing.
Investigations are now underway to establish the cause of fire.
Haswel hails from Mangwalala village, Traditional Authority (TA) Changata in Thyolo district.
