Minister of Homeland Security Nicholas Dausi has sued Vice President Saulos Chilima following the UTM leader’s claim that Dausi was behind the fire which destroyed a Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) warehouse in 2014.

According to reports, Dausi who is being represented by lawyer Frank Mbeta is accusing Chilima of defamation.

In the summons filed at the High Court, Dausi through his lawyer has asked Chilima to file defence and documents within 28 days of being served with the summons or state within 14 days if he will not enter defence.

However, Chilima’s Special Assistant Milward Tobias said the Vice President is yet to be served with the court documents.

“We will comment after we have seen what we have been charged with,” Tobias told the local media.

Last week during a whistle stop tour in Chitipa, Chilima accused Dausi  of torching the warehouse and challenged the minister who is also ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) spokesperson to sue him.

“We are not surprised; it is DPP who has stolen cameras at MEC because it is the same DPP who had set fire at MEC warehouse in 2014 led by Nicholas Dausi. If they want to sue me they should do so, we shall meet in court,” Chilima said.

Commenting on the remarks, Dausi said Chilima has a right to say whatever he wants.

The Malawi Electoral Commission warehouse was gutted by fire on the night of July 15 2014, weeks after the 2014 tripartite elections.

Property which was lost in the fire included ballot papers for Lilongwe City South East where one of the candidates had challenged the results of the polls.

The Malawi Congress Party suspected foul play but a report released by MEC in 2015 ruled out arson as the cause of the fire.
