… Suspects’ bail extended to 2017
The Malawi Police might have taken a speedy action to arrest Malawi Congress Party (MCP) members on charges of treason basing on a WhatsApp conversation but the cops seem to have lacked evidence.
The MCP members, Jessie Kabwila, Ulemu Msungama and Peter Chakhwantha, were arrested over a WhatsApp conversation which went viral on social media and led the police to believe that the three were discussing plans to overthrow President Peter Mutharika.
But for ten months, the police have been failing to take the three suspects to court arguing that they are still making investigations on the case.
Lawyer representing Kabwila, Gustavo Kaliwo, has since faulted the police for delaying the case to be taken to court.
Kaliwo said the law enforcers have been failing to give evidence on the case hence their decision to extend the bail.
“We came again because the bail application of my clients was extended to today 5th December last time we came and it has been extended again to the 31st of January next year by the Head of CID [Criminal Investigation Division].
“This case commenced in February this year. It will mean that we will have been waiting for almost a year. This matter is not being treated with urgency and seriousness. If nothing happens then we are proceeding to take the case to court within this month,” said Kaliwo.
The lawyer added that he will seek freedom of his client by having the case taken to court.
