Ministry of education officials go to work drunk

The Teachers’ Union of Malawi (TUM) is angry despite calling off a nationwide strike of teachers that had to start from May 1.

In a press briefing they had on Thursday, 5 May, in Lilongwe, TUM announced that it was postponing the nationwide strike its members were going to stage.

“We have not called off the strike but we have postponed it to give government the time to look into our grievances, especially now that the state President has intervened in the matters,” said TUM President Chauluka Muwake.

The mother body of teachers had threatened a strike over grievances it has with the Ministry of education which included an issue of delayed promotions for teachers and transfers for some other teachers.

It is said that the ministry had given transfers to teachers along with their promotions claiming that only teachers who would get the transfers will be promoted.

TUM claims that the teachers were not being given any transport to aid in the transfer.

The union also cried foul over the ministry’s handling of the issue of teachers’ promotions.

However, in a chilling and angry outburst, Muwake disclosed that the ministry of education officials do not have a thinking capacity and were mostly going to work while drunk.

“Dealing with the ministry of education officials is frustrating because we are dealing with people who don’t think and are also drunk when they go to work,” said Muwake.
