April 19th 2016 was another day to forget for some Malawian celebrities as they waved goodbye to the continental music contest that is being organised by multinational mobile company Airtel.
Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre played host to the ceremony that reduced heroes to zeroes, leaving casualties bemoaning in disbelief.
A panel of judges, who included Theo Thompson, Patience Namadingo, and Rina, laid down prominence while allowing skills to be a gateway to life-changing rewards.
Thousands of Malawians auditioned for the competition through mobile phones.
Among the list were some glittering figures in as far as local music is concerned.
These were, Angella Mizinga popularly known as Tigris, Lilia, MacLuther Mambala, and Eunice Chavula Mhango.
However, their steps towards flying the Malawian flag in the continental phenomenon have hit a snag following their premature exit.
Malawians were confident any of the four was going to emerge successful at the continental stage and make the nation proud.
It was a shocking moment to see the Malawians crash out but those who passed the test were equally good for the uphill task.
This frustrated the giants’ individual goals of shining in the fight for top spot, undeniably every participant’s dream.
Auditions continue this coming Sunday at Mount Soche Hotel, this time only five will proceed to the finals where the country’s representative will be decided.
Last year Malawi was represented by Sam Mjura Mkandawire who came out 7th at the continental level finals in Kenya.
Tanzanian Andrew Nalimi Mayunga was declared winner having impressed a panel of judges which included Senegalese musician, Akon.
This year, Malawi’s representative will be K10 million richer, while the two runners up will be consoled with K3 million and K2 million respectively.
Among other privileges, the winner will have an opportunity to be mentored by American RnB singer Keri Hilson before recording a song with her. The grand finale of the 2nd season of Airtel Trace Music Star will be held in Lagos Nigeria.
The participating countries are; Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania, Nigeria, and Niger.
