The northern city of Mzuzu has missed out on the opportunity to have a representative in the final of E-wallet talent show music contest following the eviction of Kennedy Burton last Saturday in Lilongwe.
The city was being represented by Kennedy Burton and Mwayi Matiti but tough competition made the exit door wider for the duo to bow out. They joined the race for the Nissan Tiida having emerged successful in auditions that saw close to 80 singers failing the test.
Last Saturday was another judgement day which did not favour Burton. All his preparations for the first capital city performance ended up in vain as he only appeared to wave goodbye to the country’s most prestigious music contest.
In an interview with Malawi24, E-wallet project manager, Anthony Kafuwa commended the audience for turning up in large numbers. He promised a great grand finale and said music loving Malawians should prepare for a golden final show where one of the five remaining participants will walk away with a car.
A participant from Mzuzu city has never won the contest since it started; however, Mwai Mchuchu came close in 2007 having made it to the final.
According to the organisers, their objective is to unearth local talent. In celebration of local music, the last eviction show was dedicated to Malawi music and all contestants performed local traditional music.
Kelvin Zalimba performed “Chemeli” by Giddes Chalamanda, Eunice Mhango did “Imfa ya Amuna anga” by Saleta Phiri, Sigele Akimu sang “Bwenzi langa” by Robert Fumulani, Jeremiah Chikhwaza stole the show with “gitala yolira ngati chitsulo” by Allan Namoko and Shanice Tandwe kept memories of Stonard Lungu fresh after performing “Zapadziko”.
