The Ntchisi Second Grade Magistrate’s Court has sentenced Village headman Nyalavu to 2 years imprisonment with hard labour for stealing fertilizer coupons and money amounting to K148 500.
The court heard that the convict Village headman Nyalavu whose real name is Frazer Vesiyano of Nyalavu Village in the area of Traditional Authority Kalumo in Ntchisi on January 24 2016 at Nyalavu Village stole 33 coupons of fertilizer and money amounting to K148 500 belonging to the people of Chimwere Village.
The court further heard that the people of Chimwere Village led by Village headman Chibweze approached the convict on the issue to be assisted to buy fertilizer at Nyalavu Admarc.
Upon being approached, the convict told Village headman Chibweza to collect all the coupons and money from the beneficiaries in his village which Village headman Chibweza obeyed but the convict ended up stealing the coupons and the money.
Passing sentence, Second Grade Magistrate Young Ng’oma said the convict deserved a custodial sentence but the sentence will be suspended if he pays back the money amounting to K163 000 but the village headman has failed to pay back the money and has been sent to Chikwatula Prison where he is serving his sentence.
