Govt urged to train more fire fighters

As fire continues to raze down properties in the country, some vendors in Malawi’s northern region city of Mzuzu have urged their city council to train more fire fighters citing that the available ones can not manage the task.

Speaking after loosing goods to the mysterious fire that razed down Mzuzu main market on Wednesday, vendors cited that with more fire fighting human resources, casualties in such incidences may be reduced.

They told Malawi24 that only two fire fighting vehicles and less than 10 officials, can not manage to cease fire especially in big markets like Mzuzu.

Fire Malawi“They cant manage, in fact may be had it been that they were many fire fighters and vehicles they could have managed to cease fire but as of now nothing is being done,”said one vendor.

The other one who lost his cosmetics shop blamed the fire fighters on negligence.

According to her, officials from this department are very slow such that they can not help to put down fire.

“I haven’t heard where these guys helped to cease fire. amangotibowa its better they must just stop palibe amachita,” said the trader masking in tears.

Malawi24 understands that apart from the prior stated problems, fire fighters in the city source water from a distance of 5 kilometres thus not easy to manage their task.

Another thing is that they seem to have only one way of performing their duties of using water thus some fires that are triggered by the same usually proves there work futile.

When our reporter went to press some fire fighters who seemingly were ashamed for failing their duty, they snubbed the interview citing the matter is baseless.

However, due to their failure fire kept razing down the market for two days making the casualties to double.

Meanwhile top officials at the city council have promised to comment on the matter after they will be done with their investigations on the incident.

Before publishing this cause of the fire and casualties were still subjects vendors were debating.

  2. These markets fire are very suspicious and instead of dealing with the security of market the govt seem to take another route. How sad CSO, Church organisations, opposition parties remain silent on this issue even the media their interest is only on reporting without basic investigations. If it was something else media could have investigate up to extent of giving figures just to irritate Malawians. Poor thinkers!

  5. Abale. Just a suggestion. Instead of waiting for the government to get money for this, which might be a long time. Why cant the citizens of a city like mzuzu or blantyre donate money to there officials and the officials use that money to solve these little problems. I know that that money would most likely be stolen. But it was just a suggestion. With the many problems in malawi. I think some help from citizens for the minor things would be welcome. And i think this fire was caused by poor maintenance or bad surroundings
