President Peter Mutharika is showing early signs of a dictator that could drag Malawi to a one party state, the Church of Central African Presbyterian (CCAP) has warned.

Church and Society of the Livingstonia Synod of the Church of Central African Presbyterian said during a press conference yesterday that Mutharika “was inciting violence” in his reaction to reports that he took ‘a village’ of 115 delegates to the US for the UN General Assembly which resulted in government wasting over K2 billion of public funds.

The Church warned that the country is likely to experience another bloodshed like one that occurred in 2011 should the president continue with his authoritative rule.

“President Peter Mutharika adopted hostile approach last week that should not come from a president leading a democratic nation. He showed signs of being a dictator like his late brother, Bingu with the use of words like ‘nonsense’ and the banging of the table. He was inciting violence by fueling anger among members of the public that could lead to violent protests. We should not experience another July 20 bloodshed” warned the Church.

While saying that it prefers open dialogue to demonstrations against the President, the Church strongly warned Mutharika against repeating his approach.

“Mutharika’s approach last week is very dangerous. We don’t expect to see that happening again because Malawians have the constitutional right to demand transparency from their leaders” Church and Society Executive Director, Moses Mkandawire has been quoted as saying by one of the local papers.

  66. All political parties are intact there is no single party that has been disbanded and join the ruling party. Sometimes a leader can not accommodate views of all people at once in the running affairs of the government. Other views can be taken into consideration later on as time goes on but that does not make one a dictator. If there are institutions where dictatorship style of leadership is commonly practised are religious institutions. For example Livingstonia mission was in Wrangle with Nkhoma Synod over demarcation for almost two years. If they were tolerant/democratic enough why did they fail to resolve the wrangle of demarcation? Reverend Chimwemwe Mhango was excommunicated from Livingstonia CCAP due to transfer saga if they were using democracy why did they fail to resolve the issue of transfer amicably as God fearing people? Stop publicising news with an intetion of decolourising somebody’s character inorder to gain political milage. My plea is try to post news that will unite Malawians than bringing chaos.
