Mutharika disappoints Malawi media fraternity

The Malawi Chapter of the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA-Malawi) has expressed its concern on the remarks made by President Peter Mutharika against the media during a press conference he conducted to address the public on his trip to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States of America.

The media body was reacting to Mutharika’s outbursts at the press conference where he described the media in Malawi as “irresponsible” and “agents of the opposition” after they questioned the president’s trip to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

The media criticized Mutharika over his decision to take a bloated entourage and to hire a private jet amidst the economic woes that Malawians are going through.

In a statement signed by MISA Malawi Chairperson Thom Khanje, the media body faulted the president for attacking journalists saying the media has a duty to report on matters of national importance.

“We find the remarks by the President and his press secretary retrogressive and a threat to media freedom and freedom of expression. We are surprised that the president decided to target the media with unreasonable attacks instead of responding to the issues at hand and providing information Malawians are looking for regarding the trip to the UNGA,” reads part of the statement.

Misa Malawi also said the president’s trip to the UNGA was funded by tax-payers and Malawians have every right to know how their money is being spent by those charged with the responsibility of managing the resources.

“We appeal to the State President to always be transparent and accountable as he discharges his duties. He should also respect the role of the media in providing checks and balances on his government,” said MISA Malawi in the statement.

  3. I first became in love with media for both local and international news mid 70s, when I was at Mchinji mission primary school. Mr Joseph, our class teacher brought a “Breaking news:in our class. It was about expulsion of Hon John Msonthi from MCP and cabinet. Secondly, it was in 1983, Another breaking news about assassination of three cabinet ministers and a Member of parliament on 17th May. It was news the whole world. I started hunting for balanced and detailed information from morning to evening. I tuned in from one radio station to another. BBC, Radio Moscow, VOA, Radio France international English service, radio Zambia, radio RSA….It was about well balanced news, expertise, professionalism and unbiased reporting, That is what I believe of media since then. And I have had chosen BBC finally as my favorite media house, CNN, Al Jazeera English of late. I have followed Network Africa, Focus on Africa since 1979. When Samora was killed in 1986 on 19 October, I was not at home. I was attending a workshop in Nathenje, Lilongwe. I told my wife then to record all BBC Focus on Africa programs from 19-till I was back from Seminar. Thist is about media that follows and updates news professionally. Without hate, bias, violence, favour and falsehood. I am in favour of that media house.

ZBS does investigative journalism,that is why they oftenly unvails gvt secrets which are always declined by the gvt and only to discover the truth later on.Nowadays we relay on journalist to be our mouth pieces as current gvts doesnt respect the veiws of opposition,NGOs etc.The best leader has to take hid of what journalists are saying because they are the ones who leave closer to the ordinary people that his or her advisors who bluffs him.

  45. MISA Malawi is working out of guidelines to professionalism as such it is working as political parties of these 21st Century where they act basing on ignorance of some quarters of our society. The major problem is the system of education as well as which lacks critical thinking which aims at Constructivism. Malawi is going nowhere more especially as the media is the driver for all this. It understood principles of democracy negatively and also are acting negatively. No Wonder when they argue without abstract patterns of formal logic. The media in Malawi is for destruction also for negatives.
