…who will apologize to who?
Opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has categorically stated it will not apologize to Malawi President Peter Mutharika as he requested on Thursday during a press briefing held at a Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe for being criticized on his trip to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York .
Addressing the media, Mutharika said the criticism by MCP and some media houses hurt him.
He cited the criticism were aimed at inciting people against him and the Democratic Progressive party (DPP) and demanded an apology.
But in an exclusive interview with Malawi24, MCP Publicity Secretary Jessie Kabwila fired back at Mutharika citing that the party is not going to apologize for the criticism it made.
She added taking over 100 people to New York is not just only unquestionable but also undemocratic.
Kabwila said the criticisms were aimed at providing checks and balance at a poor Malawians are crying out.
Explained Kabwila, “This is very irresponsible, the list they could have done was to apologize to Malawians and say it could not pen again but not actually to come and spit fire at hungry people. MCP wants to make it categorically clear that it will not apologize for standing with Malawians and criticizing what is wrong. It shows he is insensitive president. How can he come back with nerves and guts to people who are dying with hunger and tell them he is rich with billions in his accounts. In fact Malawians are congratulating MCP for standing out for them. This is very irresponsible; the list they could have done was to apologize to Malawians.”
MCP Spokesperson further sided with Civil Society Organization (CSO’s) who have been calling with Mutharika step down.
She reminded the Malawi leader that he was put into power by Malawians who also have the power to bring him down. Kabwila expressed shock that the DPP government continues to parade executive arrogance at a time when Malawians are leaving in pains.
“He must always remember that he is on the sit on trust of Malawians and if Malawians have lost that trust they will remind him. He seems to have forgotten what his brother went through. It was the same DPP during Bingu wa Mutharika that was shouting at the Media and messed up the economy. He should remember that Malawians reduced the twenty points CSOs wrote his brother into one.”
“Malawians are not looking for someone who is not frugal when he talks but frugal at development. How can he compare himself with other African countries when Malawi is ranked as the poorest country in the world?” questioned Kabwila.
Speaking with this publication Lilongwe based Political Analyst Loudon Malingamoyo Phiri concurred with Kabwila.
Phiri said Mutharika’s remark is a clear indication that what he did is wrong.
According to Phiri, criticizing the opposition and the media is a sign of fear and intimidation which aims at paving out some of the issues.
“It’s wrong to criticize the opposition and media because it shows that what he did is wrong. It’s something that even someone barely from the village would actually not agree with looking the situation we are passing through in this country. Criticizing the opposition and the media is a sign of fear or intimidation. He is trying pave out some of the issues. It’s wrong to criticize people when they are being constructive. It’s not just criticizing the president but making sure he is leaving up to date. Media are there to inform the public and they are supposed to do that to the president,” he uttered.
Meanwhile the political analyst has justified the by opposition MCP and the media saying that were constructive and is allowed in a democratic country.
He added, MCP has demonstrated its democratic right and is not supposed to apologize.
