Ntcheu Senior Resident Magistrate court on Monday sentenced a 54 old man to 15 years imprisonment with hard labour for raping and impregnating his 15 year old stepdaughter.
State prosecutor Assistant Superintendent Gladys Jentala, told the court that during the month of February this year, the mother to the victim, who is the wife to the convict, noticed signs of pregnancy on her daughter.
The matter was reported to police, and the victim was referred to Ntcheu District Hospital for medical examination, then the examination revealed a six week old pregnancy.
The girl then revealed that her stepfather, Amos Thom, sexually abused her.
Appearing before Senior Resident Magistrate Munthali, the stepfather pleaded guilty to the offence.
In mitigation, he asked court to be lenient saying he is the breadwinner of his family, and that he also looks after his aged and frail mother.
In submission, the state prayed for a stiff punishment saying that the trauma, the suspect has caused will continue to haunt the victim for the rest of her life.
The court sentenced the sexual offender to 15 years Imprisonment with Hard Labour to serve as a deterrent to would be offenders.
