MCP rebranding bearing fruits – analyst

Opposition Malawi Congress Party’s (MCP) recent triumph in the October 17 by-elections is an indication that the party’s quest to rebrand is paying dividends, an analyst has said.

MCP defeated ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) by amassing five seats in the six areas in which the polls were held against the DPP’s one seat.

Asked on what the result means to MCP, analyst Wonderful Mkhutche argues it’s a clear indication the party’s four year rebranding exercise is bearing fruits.

“MCP needs to applaud itself for the successful rebranding it has gone. The four year effort has paid dividends with people showing confidence in its candidates.

“On the other hand, DPP needs to reflect and embrace maturity in its politics. Campaign tactics that assume Malawians are not intelligent enough to reason will do the party great harm in 2019 if that is how the elections will be approached,” he said.

This comes as the two parties head into the 2019 polls as very tight contenders.

And Mkhutche believes MCP could spring a surprise should the DPP use a similar approach.

  15. Why are people confused by a minor MCP victory? Can you tell me, have the MCP grab a seat which formerly belonged to Dpp? In Nsanje that seat was won on independent ticket in 2014. The man only defected to dpp. In Lilongwe, those seats were won by MCP in 2014 even though the result on one area were annulled by the courts. Dpp managed to snatch a ward in Dedza and Mcp snatched a ward In Ndirande. Please don’t read too much from these elections. Only if Mcp wins a seat in Mulanje, Thyolo, Chirazulo, Zomba, Phalombe, Mangochi, Machines you can sing that Mcp has re-branded indeed. General elections are so different from these by elections. Take care!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even if you say in Malawi there are 40 million people and a sample of 2 million people can still give u a picture of which party is popular,and for ur own information,ur party DPP is losing popularity with the passing of each day.You can’t compare the popularity of the current DPP under APM and that of 2009 under the late Bingu I hope u can agree with me on that one.

You know yourself that MCP is just the name of the party n the pipo they were doing nkhaza zomwe ukenenazo are within your die hard party ( DPP). The Dausi, Ntaba just to mention a few then continue were all in MCP. Just accept that DPP is losing popularity n work out on the effects of that truth.
