‘DPP behind Kabwila’s car inferno’

Ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is behind the inferno that gutted opposition Parliamentarian Jessie Kabwila’s car, it has been claimed.

Kabwila’s car, a Toyota Fortuner, was burned down at Lilongwe Golf club where the legislator went to meet the secretary general of the troubled Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Gustav Kaliwo.

Speaking to the local media, the legislator claimed that it was clear that somebody threw something directly under the driver’s seat to burn the vehicle.

“Where the place is burning is actually clear that it [the fire] started on the driver’s side,” said Kabwila.

She then accused the ruling party of attempting to kill her in a bid to silence her and the MCP following their opposition to the recently passed Land Bill and the university fees hike.

“What makes this more suspicious is that days ago I was warned that the police are looking for me in connection with the demonstrations in Zomba.

“I knew that when you are a politician speaking for Malawi Congress Party in a DPP era the life is under threat everyday,” said Kabwila.

Asked if she has reported the issue to police, Kabwila confirmed and continued to claim that the incident was an assassination attempt.

“I would have been killed. Even if you come and see the car it is definitely an attack to kill. It was not even about me surviving, it was an assassination attempt, clear,” said the legislator.

Meanwhile, Kabwila has maintained that the MCP will not be cowered into silence even if government burns cars, saying some laws and changes the DPP are introducing will punish the poor.

The ruling DPP is a party renown for resorting to setting things ablaze if they do not agree with them. In their previous terms, the party used to throw petrol bombs in houses and offices of critics. Just this week, the Police who are under the thumb of the party set fire to student hostels at the University of Malawi.

  22. Where is democracy and freedom if people keep on torturing those who stand firm and express their views, trying to practice the freedom of expression. Shame!!!! The most pitious thing is that those who are on ground, taking brutal and shameful actions, are those with very minute gains in politics.
