The Malawi Police Service have arrested a 40 year-old man in Dedza district who was found in possession of government drugs in a joint raid with the Pharmacy, Medicines and Poisons Board (PMPB).
The man, Willie Kampira, was also operating a clinic without licence at Chimbiya Trading Centre in Dedza.
According to police, his arrest followed a tip-off from a well-wisher that the suspect was seen selling valuable government drugs in his so called clinic.
The information forced the PBMB and the police to immediately follow up and on Monday they arrested the culprit after they caught him selling the drugs.
The drugs which are worth millions include LA, Contrimoxole, Chloramphemine, Aminomphylline, Salbutamol, Phenobarbitone, Doxycycline, hydrochlorathiadfe, Loflac, Rifapicin, Metronidazole, Paracetamol, Ferrow sulphate, Megnesium, and Praziquartel.
Drug Inspector for PMPB Joseph Chimerang’ambe said they conduct the raids because there are complications that can result when people take poorly stored drugs.
He added that selling government drugs also deprives innocent Malawians from accessing drugs in public hospitals.
Kampira has since been found guilty for being found in possession of medical drugs contrary to section 35 (1) (a) as read with section 45 (3) of Pharmacy, medicines and Poisons Act.
This is the third time for Kampira to be convicted for being found in possession of medical drugs without licence. On the two previous occasions, he was sentenced to one-year jail terms or in default to pay fines and term he paid fines.
He comes from Kudemera village T/A Kaphuka in Dedza.
