In the ongoing scramble for titles which has rocked Malawi politics, Malawi24 can exclusively reveal that the University of Malawi will be awarding former leader of opposition John Zenus Ungapake Tembo.

According to a source at the university of Malawi, Tembo will be awarded a honorary doctorate degree at the Great Hall in Zomba on Wednesday, 23 March 2016.

“I can confirm to you that Hon. Tembo will be awarded with a doctorate at the next graduation,” said a source.

The source further said that the ceremony will be presided over by the state President, Peter Mutharika who also serves as the Chancellor of the university.

Tembo is expected to be awarded the honorary degree in Leadership and Management.

At its last congregation, the university awarded first lady Gertrude Mutharika over her role in protecting the environment through her controversial beautify Malawi initiative. The award created a social media storm as many people said she was undeserving of the award.

Tembo, on the other hand has been a larger part of the Malawi political landscape. He tried to hook the presidency for three times but was unsuccessful.

In 2013, Tembo announced his resignation from politics and handed over the leadership of the Malawi Congress Party to Dr. Lazarus Chakwera.

  117. That doesn’t mean he should be addressed as “Dr”, please people. That title is reserved for medical doctors and real PH.D graduates. Honorary doctorates are supposed to retain their original Mr, Mrs or Miss titles, hence Mr Mandela etc
