After he spent a cold night at an undisclosed police station Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Ulemu Msungama has now been charged with Sedition over his role in a looming coup plot against President Peter Mutharika.

According to police, Msungama who shares the charges with voacl MCP Publicist Jessie Kabwila and official Peter Chakwantha contrary to Section 51 of the Penal Code.

Msungama was netted on Sunday after a Whatsapp conversation which saw MCP members planning to oust Mutharika as was done with Muhamad Moursi of Egypt  was leaked to police.

Initial reports suggested that he and the others would be charged with treason.

In the string of WhatsApp messages linked the MCP, they are, for instance, said to have conspired to pursue the Arab Spring-like revolution to overthrow president Mutharika and his government.

They are said to have been infuriated by what they see as the president’s failure to end a stinging food crisis that has seen maize prices triple in just under a few months and inflation exceed over 20%.

The kwacha has also sharply fallen. The MCP officials are said to have agreed to take advantage of the situation to call for a rebellion that would appear to have been sparked by Malawians in diaspora.

They promised us solutions to economic crisis however things have gone worse than they were. The youth have no jobs. Government is no longer recruiting any employees coz of money. There is no food on Malawian tables. Four months have gone without the cheapest painkiller panado yet I’m deducted so much tax from my salary and later fail to access medical treatment. Where does our money go to?
