Hunger stricken man who wanted to sell his brother jailed for six years

A 21 year-old Malawian man who offered his 13 year-old brother for sale at MK 1 Million has been sentenced to six years imprisonment with hard labor.

Last week, police in Thyolo district arrested Samson Phiri after a potential buyer he approached reported him to police.

CourtPolice said that he was to answer the charge of offering for sale a child contrary to section 82 of the Child Care Protection and Justice Act.

But before the Senior Resident Magistrate, Benedictus Chitsakamire, the suspect was quick to plead guilty.

Magistrate Chitsakamire said that it was inhumane to sell a fellow human being, worse still one’s own brother, instead of protecting him.

“The court therefore has given the accused such a punishment as a warning to other would-be offenders.”

The suspect said that the hunger situation forced himt to do such an act, which received condemnation ion the social media.

Phiri  hails from Ndombole village, Traditional Authority Kapichi in Thyolo.
