Man in custody for trying to sell brother in Thyolo

crime (2)Police in Thyolo district are keeping in custody a 21 year-old man who offered his 13 year-old brother for sale.

Thyolo police public relations officer, Edith Kachotsa, identified the man as Samson Phiri and said he was arrested on Tuesday.

According to Kachotsa, Phiri wanted to sell his brother to a businessman for K1 million but the trader alerted officers at Thyolo police station who did not hesitate to arrest the suspect.

Phiri who hails from Ndombole village, Traditional Authority Kapichi in Thyolo district will appear before court soon to answer charges of offering for sale a child contrary to section 82 of child care protection and justice act.

Malawi is one of the countries in southern Africa with high cases of child and human trafficking.

Last month, a couple was arrested in the commercial city of Blantyre for attempting to sell their child in order to raise money to construct a house.
