The Urban Music People (UMP) awards are around the corner and you might be wondering if the foreign artists nominated in the best SADC International Act slot will make it to the event. Well, the organisers have an answer for you.
Having introduced the category last year, there were high expectations from people regarding the presence of the nominated artists prior to the event. Then came the awards day, the winner, South Africa`s Cassper Nyovest, was awarded in absentia.
This year it will be the same story as none of the international artists has confirmed making the trip to Malawi for the ceremony. According to UMP Project Coordinator Timothy Phanga, the accolade will be sent to the winner.
“We don’t expect any of the nominated musicians to come, we have just notified them about the nominations. To cut the long story short, they will be awarded in absentia,” said Phanga
South African musicians dominate the category which has four names in total. The nominated musicians are AKA, Cassper Nyovest, King Monada (South Africa) and Diamond Platinumz from Tanzania.
Nyovest is looking forward to defend the award however his countryman, King Monada, is considered the real threat in the view of his trending Malwedhe hit song.
