UTM shadow councillor for Chipatala Ward in Blantyre City South constituency has blamed authorities at Zingwangwa health centre for politicising charity activities she conducted at the facility.

The shadow councillor Thokozani Phekani who renovated dilapidated maternity wing toilets and bathrooms, said she was denied access to the facility when she planned to officially hand over the toilets to be in use.

According to Phekani, her motive to renovate the toilets and bathrooms came out of goodwill and not to seek her political mirage.

“As an aspiring shadow councillor I saw it wise to help the human needs to expectant mothers admitted at facility and I was surprised with the response from responsible personnel when I was told I cannot officially hand over the development.

Phekani said before commencement of the project, responsible authorities gave them a go ahead for the project and they completed all necessary procedures.

When approached for comment, Zingwangwa Health Centre Chairperson for Health advisory Committee Linily Gama reserved her comment on the matter saying she is not mandated to speak for the facility.

Blantyre district Health Officer, Penjani Chunda was not available for comment as his phone went unanswered.

Phekani however advised authorities in different government departments not to politicise development activities regardless of political affiliations.

Zingwangwa Health Centre had been running   for a year without toilets and bathrooms for the maternity wing when the UTM politician came in to help.
