NAC vows to leave no group behind in HIV response

The National Aids Commission (NAC) has vowed to leave no group behind in its response to HIV in Malawi.

Chief Executive Officer for National Aids Commission Davie Kalomba said this on Thursday during annual review conference of National Response to HIV and AIDS which was held at BICC in Lilongwe.

He said NAC will not leave any group behind in making sure that people have access to HIV treatment.

He added that the organisation will continue to be accountable to stakeholders and government in how it uses available resources.

Speaking with reporters, Chairperson for HIV and AIDS Development Partner Group Won Tan Hong said young people aged from 15 to 24 are involved in sexual relations hence are and vulnerable to  HIV.

Hong noted that almost 70 percent of youth aged 15 to 24 that are infected with HIV and AIDS are girls.

In his remarks, Chief of Health Services in the Ministry of Health Dr Charles Mwansambo said prevention should be prioritised.

He added that government has strategies that focuses on youths so that young people should not catch the virus.

Mwasambo therefore urged organizations to give support and avoid discrimination to those that are living with HIV and AIDS.

Meanwhile, Malawi on Saturday joined rest of the world in commemorating World Aids Day.

The government through Ministry of Health and Population said it will be distributing self-testing kits which will give many people a chance to know their HIV status.

On Friday, Minister of Health and Population Atupele Muluzi tested himself in Parliament to set an example.
