Government has praised President Peter Mutharika for the just passed Access to Information (ATI) bill saying the proposed law would not have been tabled if Mutharika was not in power.
Speaking after Members of Parliament legislators passed the bill in to law, government’s spokesperson Malison Ndau said the passing of the legislation shows that Mutharika is the pillar of the nation.
“As government we are very happy and excited that the long waited bill has passed, we believe that this has happened because our president is a leader who understand and gives an ear to what his people want, in Malawi we have had some presidents in the past but they failed to accept the reality so as a party and government we want to thank the president for accepting that the bill should be tabled in Parliament,” said Ndau.
He added that this was one of the of the promises the Democratic Progressive Party made when it was campaigning for the 2014 tripartite elections and shows that the party and Mutharika do not make empty promises just to get favours from the nation.
Speaking on the same, leader of opposition in the house Lazarus Chakwera said he was happy that government has done one of the most important things Malawians have been waiting for.
On his part, chairperson of the Parliamentary Media and Communications Committee Sam Kawale congratulated his fellow members in the committee for doing everything possible to make sure that the bill becomes a law.
MISA-Malawi Thoma Khanje said it is another birthday in the history of Malawi since the bill has been a song for over 10 years.
“We feel grateful and we want to congratulate government, the opposition and all stakeholders who pumped in their efforts to make this dream become a reality and we believe that government will support whatever that is accompanied by this law,” he said.
The bill was scheduled to be tabled in Parliament last week but it was postponed to Tuesday this week which was again shifted for Wednesday when it was passed late in the day.

APM has many reasons to smile on because the ATI bill has been discussed and passed during his first term in Office when Kamuzu, Bakili, Bingu and Joice’s eras didn’t tackle this!
Opposition MPs did a good job. We were watching everything on the national TV-Zodiak. Now this Bill will help Pitala provide checks and balances to the next Government in 2019. Dr. Laz n MCP is taking over.
That’s your reasoning.
Govt has praised The president ! Which govt? Of which we are having three arms namely: judiciary, legislature& excective. And then your god which you praise is in the govt itself!kkkkkkkkkk
iwe Peter Muntharika don’t take malawians as fools this propaganda must stop all malawians knows that dpp thieves didn’t want this bill to pass cos of their bloody dirty hands and dpp and udf mp voted against it only 6mp frm govt voted for the bill to pass bt the lest dpp refuse by voting NO

Which government is this praising Peter for this? Is it not his side that did not want to table discuss and pass it. Did it not take the voting which fell on the opposition side to discuss it?
