A court in Blantyre has sentenced a 36 year-old man to five years imprisonment with hard labour (IHL) for sexually abusing a teenage girl.
The convict, Charles Kuleti, was reported to have raped a 16 year-old girl on August 17 this year at Chileka Township in the commercial city.
State prosecutor Dingi Mbepula told the court that a medical report revealed that the girl was raped as reported by the victim to her parents.
Mbepula called for a stiff punishment arguing that the country has registered high number of defilement cases this year.
However during mitigation, the convict pleaded for lenient punishment arguing that he is disabled and that he did not know that the girl is only 16 years-old.
In his ruling magistrate Kondanani Chinangwa handed Kuleti a 5 year jail term considering that he is a person with a disability.
Kuleti comes from Nyamula village, Traditional Authority (TA) Tengani in Nsanje district.
