Charles Kumwenda, 25, is in Police custody after he was caught writing Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations on behalf of his friend.

According to Eastern Region Police Public Relations Officer Sergeant Autilia Kumanga, Police have also arrested the friend, 40 year-old Joseph Makiyi, for conspiring with Kumwenda to cheat during the exams.

Makiyi who works as an administrator for Prison Fellowship obtained annual leave from his office so as to sit for the 2016 MSCE examinations at Balaka Islamic Institute.

ArrestedBut instead he hired his close friend Kumwenda who is a health surveillance assistant at Kapirre Health centre to write the exams on his behalf.

“Kumwenda managed to acquire a MANEB identification card in the false name of Joseph Makiyi,” Kumanga said.

On the afternoon of 30 June 2016 during the sitting of Human Geography paper, Kumwenda was caught in the act by Stone Mtambalika, an examination security officer at MANEB, who at the moment went to Balaka Islamic Institute to inspect progress of the exams.

“Kumwenda looked nervous and unsettled the moment he saw the Maneb officer entering into the examination room, this made Mtambalika to draw closer to the candidate and ask what was wrong with him, the student eventually revealed that he was writing the exams on behalf of his friend whose name was on the student identification card,” Kumanga said.

Mtambalika reported the issue to Balaka police and upon investigations Makiyi was arrested at his house where he was found sitting idle. The suspects will appear before court to answer a case of cheating during examinations under Maneb Act 29:18 and Amended Penalties Act 14:08. Makiyi and Kumwenda hail from the same village of Lupanga, Traditional Authority Nsamala in Balaka District.
