Malawians outnumber other nationalities at Lindela

Malawians represent half of the detainees at Lindela Repatriation Centre, according to reports.

Local media houses are reporting that it is currently estimated that almost half of those detained at Lindela Repatriation Centre are Malawians followed by Zimbabweans and Mozambique nationals.

The Malawians are believed to have been caught in operation fiela which South Africa carried out last year.

Operation fiela also resulted in the repatriation of 15,000 undocumented immigrants to their home countries by September 2015.

Malawi’s High Commissioner to South Africa Chrissie Kaponda confirmed the detention of Malawians, saying most Malawians cross the borders to hunt for jobs in the rainbow nation.

“Most of them lack proper documentation and end up being arrested. The situation is very worrisome,” she said.

Reports suggests that the hunger that has hit Malawi, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe will push many desperate citizens to seek greener pastures in South Africa this year.

I wouldn’t agree with you Stevie Kaliati Mukapata not all Malawians residing in south Africa are not educated, sometimes it’s just that people don’t find a proper job according to their studies here in Malawi and the wedge makes it worse, you will find a gardener getting paid 3× what a graduate is getting here in malawi.our government is just as poor as Its citizens
