Church grouping rally behind Msonda on homosexuality

Weeks after his Facebook post in which he said that gays do not deserve any human rights and should be killed landed him in trouble as gay rights campaigners sued him, People’s Party Publicist, Ken Msonda may now afford a smile as a religious grouping of Christians and Muslims is siding with him.

The Christian and Muslim youths calling themselves Youth with a Vision have started a campaign aimed at mobilising moral and financial support from Malawians to help Msonda in court.

The grouping has opted for the tag ‘Team-Ken Msonda’ and is now appealing for help to support the politician.

The People’s Party spokesperson who was expressing his personal opinion described homosexuality as a sin and said it should not be legalised.

Msonda is quoted as saying that gays are “worse than dogs and deserve to be sent to hell or to be killed.”

His remarks attracted the wrath of Malawi Law Society (MLS) who condemned Msonda and said the PP spokesperson had shown irresponsible behaviour which will incite violence in the country. “As all right thinking members of society would agree with us, however, this irresponsibility takes an unacceptably different turn when political leaders and opinion makers take the lead. The society finds Mr Msonda’s alleged utterances contemptible, irresponsible and bordering on hate speech,” said MLS in a statement signed by its president John Suzi Banda.

Gay rights advocates, Cedep and CHRR then decided to drag Msonda to court to answer a charge of incitement to break the law under section 124 (1) (b) of the Penal Code. The Section states that “any person who, whether in writing or by words or by his behaviour or otherwise— (a) solicits or incites any other person to fail to comply with or to contravene any law in force in Malawi or in any part thereof; or (b) indicates or implies to any person that it would be incumbent or desirable to fail to comply with or to contravene any such law, shall be liable to imprisonment for five years”

According to the Section, claims that one’s incitement could not lead to actual violence cannot be used as a defence.

Speaking to the media, CHRR executive director Timothy Mtambo said that they had dragged Msonda to court not because he specifically targeted gays but for his remarks. He said: “If he was saying we should kill all short people, we would equally drag him to court.”
