The Office of the President and Cabinet has ordered Malawi Police to impound Malawi Government vehicles following reluctance by some civil servants to hand over the vehicles for the Region 5 Games.
Malawi is hosting the Region 5 Games from 2nd December to 11 December in Lilongwe. Government has been mobilizing vehicles from ministries, departments and agencies to be used for transportation of about 3500 players and delegates.
According to a letter from the Office of the President and Cabinet addressed to the Inspector General of Malawi Police, efforts to mobilize the required number of vehicles have been hit by reluctance by some officers to hand over the vehicles.
This has forced the head of the civil service to order police to impound Government vehicles on the roads of Malawi.
“In order to facilitate successful hosting of the games, and as a measure of last resort, you are requested to impound government vehicles. This will help to meet the shortfall of vehicles required for the event,” reads part of the letter dated 28 November and signed by Dickson Chunga for Secretary to the President and Cabinet.
President Lazarus Chakwera will officially open the games tomorrow which have attracted ten countries: hosts Malawi as well as Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique , South Africa, Zambia, Angola, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
