… Says he is not Leader of Opposition
Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera says he will not respond to President Peter Mutharika’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) because Mutharika is an illegitimate president.
The MCP leader said at a press briefing in Lilongwe this morning that he does not recognise Mutharika as president of Malawi.
Mutharika delivered the SONA on Friday in Parliament and it is traditional for the leader of opposition to respond to the address.
Chakwera is leader of the opposition party with highest number of Members of Parliament (MPs) but he is challenging the outcome of the May 21 presidential in which Mutharika was declared winner.
Asked at the press briefing if he will go to Parliament to respond to Mutharika’s address, Chakwera said he has taken the issue to court and cannot work as Leader of the Opposition before the final determination of the court.
He however said MCP MPs will be in Parliament in order to scrutinise the national budget so that Malawians should not be economically affected by the election court case.
Speaking on the election case, Chakwera said if after the hearing the court rules that the outcome of the presidential elections was not affected by irregularities, he will follow the rule of law since he trusts the courts.
On Friday, the five judge panel Constitutional Court threw out Mutharika’s preliminary objection to dismiss the petition filed by Chakwera and UTM leader Saulos Chilima. The ruling means the election case will continue.
