Three Malawi police officers nabbed for accepting bribes

Kanengo police station in Lilongwe is keeping in custody three police officers and one other person who were arrested on Monday in connection to a clip which has gone viral on social media.

According to central region police public relations officer superintendent Nolliettie Chihana, the four suspects are being investigated over charges bordering on corruption.

“Once the case is established, the four will be charged with a case of corrupt practices under section 396 of the penal code,” Chihana told Malawi24.

Chihana further said the clip which has gone viral on social media shows the suspects doing a corrupt practice.

The video was captured on 29th October, 2017 at National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) within Kanengo Industrial Area where the police officers were deployed on private duties.

The three police officers have been identified as Sergeant Evelyn Mzembe aged 33, Constable Thokozani Chembezi aged 35 and Constable Merceline Romani aged 29. They are all based at Kanengo police station.

The civilian person has been identified as Tipilile Chamba Nkhoma aged 41, of Chakomba village, Traditional Authority Mponera in Dowa.

  3. All these happen because of poor management and allocation of resources in our countries. Instead of working on improving service in our public departments, including the betterment of salaries to our own servants, we keep intimidating and forming restrictive legal frameworks everyday as if laws are eaten.

    I tell you, everywhere you go in Africa, public servants are misbehaving in various ways. In Congo, in Tanzania, in Zambia, Malawi, South Africa, Burundi etc you’ll find corruption. Some countries don’t even have regular salaries to their military men and women and in such situation we expect them to behave as per what we call “CODES OF CONDUCT”? Codes of conduct by anyway will be changed to “Codes of theft”!! That’s what these guys do.

    In 2015 I travelled to a certain African country (name in pocket lol), at the migration office I came across this tough officer who asked for my passport and where was I heading and I thoroughly replied. Then he said, for a person in order to go to the city of their country I mentioned, must have an invitation letter. I thought for a while and I told him once that I was just a self sponsored tourist and so I had no any invitation letter from any organization and that the only documents I had were my personal ones including papers of work which some I showed him. Still he kept insisting on the same view, that I must provide a letter of invitation!!

    I got out and met an old man, who seemed like had been following my debate with the migration officer. The old man approached me and asked if I had some two or three paper currency and I said yes. He went saying that I should take some and put on the first page of my passport and return to the officer and see…. Well, I admit I followed his advice and guess what? The officer took the money front my passport in front of us customer and stamped, off I was free… The old man looked at me outside the office, while smiling he told me, “Hope you won’t forget the rule of the game next time, young man” I shook my head to acknowledge that and left the place.

    Corruption therefore in Africa, especially in public offices has no shame, for those who engage in it are many than the ‘Children of light’
