Cassava farmers in Nkhotakota are worried of low harvests due to monkeys that are invading their farms to destroy tubers.
Malawi24 caught up with some farmers in the district who said the situation may lead to hunger.
In an interview with this publication, one of the farmers Latifa Chisisili said the situation is worrisome since cassava is their staple food.
“The situation is really bad since monkeys in large numbers are invading our farms. They are destroying both fresh and dried tubers.
“Here in rural Nkhotakota we rely on cassava for our survival since maize doesn’t perform well due to environment,” she told Malawi24.
She added that currently some farmers are spending daytime in their fields to chase away the monkeys.
Nkhotakota district is one of the districts in Malawi that takes cassava as staple food.
The problem is serious in villages of Mbalame, Chizili, Chamba, Thandaza and Nkhandwe which are under Traditional Authority Malengachanzi in the district.
